1 Sunscreen

When the air turns crisp many people feel they can ease up on the sunscreen.  The truth is, that some of the worst sunburns occur in the winter.

There are two main types of sunscreen:

  • physical sunscreen – which block the sun’s rays
  • chemical sunscreens – which absorb the sun’s rays

Make sunscreen a daily part of your morning routine.  Cover your face, chest and even your hands with at least a 30 SPF.

2  Give a little extra attention to those places where you are extra dry

Your feet, elbows, and knees may become particularly dry in the winter months.  Show them some extra love by applying a heavy moisturizer before you go to bed.  Vaseline can be a great budget-friendly choice.

Pro Tip:  If your feet are particularly dry, before bed, apply a thick layer of Vaseline or heavy cream to your feet and then put on some socks.  When you wake up the skin on your feet will be soft and moisturized.

3  Moisturize Your Face

Moisturizers are crucial for all skin types.  Even if you have oily skin, it is important to moisturize.  Not only will it keep your face hydrated, it will help fight wrinkles.

Choose a moisturizer that is best for your skin type and apply morning and night.

4  Post Shower Skin Care

Winters are notoriously dry. The cold temperatures seem to pull the moisture from the air and from your skin

Moisturizer isn’t just for your face.  Your body needs some love and hydration too. The best time to moisturize your body is while it is still damp after a shower.

If you don’t want to use moisturizer to your whole body, consider using coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil for a budget and eco friendly alternative.

5 Essential Oils

Essential Oils are a great, natural way to relieve dry itchy skin, without any added chemicals.

Not only are they a more affordable option that many creams and lotions, you can make your own to suit your personal needs.  Plus, the aroma can provide additional health benefits, such as to help insomnia, stress, and promote general well-being and happiness.

Try adding a few drops of essential oils or a bath bomb infused with essential oils to your bath.  The oils will bind to your skin to keep it feeling moisturized.

To add essential oils to the bath, mix a few drops of your chosen essential oils with a quarter cup of a carrier such as olive or grape-seed oil.  After filling our bath with warm water (not too hot, as the oils will evaporate) add your essential oil mixture to the bath, mix well and enjoy.

Some essential oils that are great for alleviating dry skin are Cedarwood, Geranium, Myrrh, Rose, Ylang-Ylang, Frankincense, Patchouli, Lavender, Tangerine or Palmarosa.

6 Pamper Your Lips

The elements can work together to not only make your lips dry, they can crack and bleed.    Chapped lips can

Wind, sun, and dry air can all work together to chap your lips. Chapped lips are not only a nuisance, they hurt. They can crack and bleed. Some chapsticks work better than others. Find a hydrating formula that works for you. The best lip treatments also have sunscreen in them for double protection.

7 Hand Therapy

Invest in a good hand moisturizer, and use it whenever you feel your hands are dry, and after washing your hands.

If you are feeling extra fancy, get a paraffin wax treatment.  You can go to the spa and have the treatment done, or you can purchase a small paraffin wax unit for personal use.  If you have never had one done before, you will be amazed at how baby soft your hands will feel.  You can even use it on your tired achy feet.  Once you try it, you will be addicted.  You have been warned.

Winter doesn’t have to leave your skin looking like an alligator.  Pamper, protect and hydrate your skin.

What are some of your favorite ways to keep your skin moisturized?

Great tips on how to take extra care of your skin. Mine gets super dry just like my lips, especially if there’s freezing outside or extremely hot! I started using the sunscreen on everyday basics. I think it was a good choice.

I really hate using moisturizer. I really do. It makes me feel greasy, but I know I should use it. I definitely do have to have an after shower routine especially since I love my showers hot!

Winter skin indeed needs some extra care and effort. Face oils are a great savior for the skin and to maintain the health and glow. My hands are very dry and do tend to forget to apply the hand cream. Paraffin wax unit sounds like something I would check out.

I would have never thought that you can get a sunburn in winter, unless you go skiing in the mountains. It’s a great advice to use sunscreen in your daily morning beauty routine. And moisturizing is a must, the harsh weather can only do damage to your skin.

It’s cliche, but Lavender is my personal favorite because it has so many uses, it’s calming, an anti-inflammatory, soothing, and helps with dry skin.
