The Grand Canyon is a wonder of nature, and one of those places that we all have to visit at least once. If you are planning on taking the family to visit the Grand Canyon, here are some tips to make it more enjoyable and the best places to go with the little munchkins.

Set up the Excitement

Before you go, head to your local library, and take out some books about the Grand Canyon.  This will not only allow your children to learn about where they are going, it will create a sense of excitement for the kids.  This is also a great opportunity to set up your expectations.

Accommodations

When looking for accommodations, find a place that has air conditioning and a swimming pool.  While it may not sound as important at first, the temperatures at the Grand Canyon can easily creep to over 100 degrees in the summer, and the kids will want a place to cool off after the daily activities.  Plus, what kid doesn’t love the pool.

Be a Junior Ranger

If your children are between the ages of 4-14, there is an amazing FREE program offered by the National Park Service called the Junior Ranger Program.   This program provides children with an age-appropriate activity book with activities for them to complete.  Once they have completed the activities they receive a badge.  All kids love a reward, and the activities are educational and fun.

Imax

Take a trip to the IMAX theatre in Tusayan.  Your entire family will enjoy experiencing the Grand Canyon, throughout time on a giant six-story movie screen with surround sound.

Fly Like an Eagle, soaring over the rim of the canyon, dive into the depths of the craggy canyons. Experience whitewater rafting down the Colorado River and sense the raging currents around you while sitting comfortably in the theatre.

This is a visually stunning, non-stop, thrilling filmed adventure with realistic sounds with the sensation of motion.  This cannot be missed.

Defy gravity on the skywalk

Take in the majestic scenery from the top of the canyon by walking along the Grand Canyon Skywalk.  A horseshoe-shaped canteliver bridge with glass walkway in the Grand Canyon West area of the main canyon.

Hopefully, you aren’t afraid of heights.
