Winter is coming.  And I am not making some corny reference to Game of Thrones.  It’s that time of year, where you put away your summer clothes and bring out the winter gear.  Everyone (or at least I) get excited about the fall and sweater weather, but the same enthusiasm isn’t shown for winter fashion.

Probably because, if you are anything like me, winter fashion makes me think of bulky winter gear reminiscent of Michelin Man or the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

Dressing for winter can be utilitarian, with warmth often taking precedence over style.

That doesn’t have to be the case.  Today’s styles and designers are making winter styles fashionable, at every price point.

Whether you are going skiing, taking the dog for a walk, or running an errand, here are 6 tips and tricks to stay fashionable and fabulous this winter, while staying warm.

1.  Fit

This is probably the most important piece of advice when dressing for any season.  Looking your best is about wearing things that fit and that are flattering to your body type.

Forget label sizes, they don’t matter.  No one will see it anyway.  Invest in clothes that fit you and your body, and you are already ahead of the curve.

2. Layer

When it gets bone-chillingly cold, it’s easy to throw fashion to the wind and toss on the thickest warmest clothes we have.  Streamlining your outfit into multiple layers is a sure-fire way to stay fashionable and warm this winter.

Start with a basic fitted long sleeve shirt or blouse and put on a cozy sweater.  Pair with straight leg jeans and thigh-high flat boots to elevate any casual warm winter look to add layers and warmth.  When you are ready to leave the house and a coat, scarf and a winter hat and your ensemble is complete.

Bonus: When you layer your clothes, you can always remove any layers if you begin to overheat.

3. Choose Your Winter Coat Wisely

Invest in the best quality winter coat you can afford.

If you can only afford one coat, choose a coat that is at least water resistant and ideally will cover your rear end.

I recommend a neutral style parka that can take you from the office to a night out on the town stylishly, without sacrificing warmth.

4. Trendy Flat Boots

Having good quality boots that keep your feet warm and dry are key to any winter style.

While over the knee stilettos can be sexy, they aren’t very practical when walking around in snow and ice.

Choose waterproof flat boots that have rubber soles so you don’t slip and fall in slippery conditions.

5. Don’t Be Afraid of Colors and Prints

Winter doesn’t have to be drab. Add bright colors, patterns design and textures to your winter wardrobe.

If bright colors aren’t your thing, consider wearing neutrals with a pop of color, or mixing textures.  Or, forget the old wives tale that you can’t wear white after labor day, and sport an all-white winter ensemble.

6. Matchy Matchy?

When putting your outerwear together, the question arises whether everything should be the same monochromatic.  While monochromatic looks are very trendy this season, there is no reason that everything you wear should be the same color or look.

When accessorizing choose what would best compliment your coat and boots.

For example, neutral colored coat and boots can be mixed and matched with hats and scarves with bold colors and prints.  If, on the other hand, you fell in love with a winter coat with a bold floral print, rock it with neutral accessories to keep all the attention on the coat.

Fashion isn’t one size fits all.  Make it work for you and your style.

Take the time to go out and find outwear that not only fits but makes you feel good as well.  Ensure that it will keep you warm.

There are so many fabulous and fashionable winter clothing options, function is important, but you can still be stylish and put together.
